What Our Technician Wants You to Know
A lot of drivers assume warm air from the AC means they just need a recharge. Sometimes that’s true. But modern AC systems don’t lose refrigerant under normal operation — they’re a closed circuit. If the level is low, there is a leak, and a recharge alone won’t fix it. We check pressure, look for oily residue around fittings and the compressor, and use UV dye when the source isn’t obvious.
On the heating side, the most commonly missed diagnosis is a thermostat that’s stuck open. The engine never fully warms up, so the coolant never gets hot enough to heat the cabin — and people assume it’s the heater core, which is a much bigger job. We always confirm thermostat function before going further. Diagnosis first saves you money every time.
The other thing worth mentioning: your cabin air filter. Most people have never replaced theirs. A severely clogged filter cuts airflow so much that even a working AC or heater can’t keep up. It’s one of the cheapest services on the vehicle and one of the most overlooked.

The most common cause is low refrigerant from a slow leak. Others include a failing compressor, a bad expansion valve, a blocked condenser, or a blend door that isn’t sending air through the evaporator. The only way to know is a diagnosis. We pressure-test and inspect the system before recommending a repair, so you’re not paying to fix the wrong thing.
Most often it’s a thermostat stuck open. The engine never fully warms up, so there’s no heat for the cabin. It can also be low coolant, a clogged or failing heater core, or a blend door actuator problem. We start with the simplest and least expensive possibilities and confirm the cause before recommending a repair.
Have the AC checked every couple of years, or whenever cooling drops off. Refrigerant can seep slowly past seals over time, so a gradual loss over several seasons is common. Replace the cabin air filter on the schedule in your owner’s manual too, since a clogged filter is one of the most overlooked causes of weak AC and heat.
Usually, yes. A dead AC won’t stop the vehicle from running. But if the compressor is failing and noisy, running the AC can damage the rest of the system, so turn it off until it’s repaired. And in extreme heat, a working AC is a safety issue, especially with children or older passengers. We’ll give you an honest read on how urgent it is.
It depends on the year, make and model. Many older vehicles use R-134a, and most newer ones use R-1234yf. We check your vehicle’s specifications before any service and use the correct refrigerant.
