“The transmission is one of the most expensive parts on most vehicles, and most drivers never think about it until it fails. A fluid change on schedule is cheap insurance. A rebuilt or replaced transmission is not. I’ve seen transmissions at 60,000 miles with fluid so far gone it looked like tar.”
There’s a long-running debate about flushing a high-mileage transmission whose fluid has never been changed. In those cases, especially if the vehicle already has symptoms, I prefer a drain-and-fill over an aggressive flush. It’s more conservative, gets fresh fluid in, and avoids disturbing deposits in a worn unit.
CVTs are in a category of their own. They’re more sensitive to fluid type and service interval than conventional automatics, and when one fails it can fail with little warning. If you drive a CVT and the fluid has never been serviced, that’s the first thing I’d address.
The other thing drivers miss is slow leaks. A seeping pan gasket or seal can drop the fluid level enough to cause shifting problems and heat damage long before you notice a spot on the driveway. If your fluid is low and nobody’s been adding any, there’s a leak, and finding it early is far better than finding it after the damage.
When a Fluid Change Saves the Transmission
Here’s a pattern we see often. A vehicle starts hesitating slightly before it engages Drive, usually worse on hot days. The owner assumes that’s just how it runs. When the fluid is checked it’s dark brown, well past its service interval, and still the factory fill at close to 70,000 miles. A fluid exchange and filter replacement often clears up a mild hesitation like that within a few miles, as long as it’s caught before internal damage sets in.
That’s the story behind most transmission repairs. It starts small—a slight delay, a shift that feels a little rough, or a check engine light—and gets explained away. A fluid change at the right time costs a small fraction of a rebuild, and it’s the maintenance that breaks that pattern.

Many manufacturers recommend every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, though some newer vehicles have longer intervals or “lifetime” fluid. CVTs often call for service sooner. Stop-and-go driving can shorten any interval. Your owner’s manual is the starting point; if you’re unsure, bring it in and we’ll check the fluid and give you a straight answer.
A fluid change (drain-and-fill) drains the fluid from the pan and refills it, which replaces only part of the total, since some stays in the torque converter and cooler lines. A flush uses a machine to exchange nearly all of it. For most vehicles on a normal schedule, a drain-and-fill is appropriate. For vehicles with badly degraded fluid, we decide which approach makes more sense based on condition and mileage.
It depends on the cause. If the slipping comes from low or worn-out fluid or a clogged filter, a fluid service may fix it. If it’s worn clutch packs, a failing solenoid or internal damage, fluid alone won’t. Either way, we check the fluid and scan for codes first, and give you an honest picture before recommending anything.
