I always check alternator output with the engine running. A healthy charging system typically holds roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts at the battery. Below that, the battery isn’t getting a full charge during normal driving and slowly drains trip by trip. If the alternator is undercharging, a new battery may only last a few weeks.
Age matters too. Most batteries last about three to five years, and New England’s cold winters and hot, humid summers tend to push them toward the shorter end of that range.
When It Finally Won't Start
Here’s a pattern we see all the time. A car has been cranking slowly for a couple of weeks, always on the first start of the morning. The owner keeps meaning to deal with it. Then one evening, in a parking lot on Route 6, it won’t start at all. A jump gets it to the shop, the load test shows the battery has lost much of its capacity, and the alternator and cables check out fine. A new battery goes in, the terminals are cleaned and protected, and the car is back on the road in under an hour.

Most car batteries last three to five years. In New England, cold winters and temperature swings tend to push them toward the shorter end. If your battery is three or more years old and showing any symptoms, a free load test will tell you where it really stands, instead of guessing by age.
