Shocks, Struts & Suspension Diagnosed Right Here
Your suspension does more than smooth out the ride. It keeps the tires in contact with the road, keeps the steering precise and lets the brakes do their job. As suspension parts wear, gradually and without much warning, all three suffer.
At Midas Fairhaven we service the complete suspension: shocks, struts, ball joints, control arms, sway bar links, tie rod ends and wheel bearings. Every suspension job starts with the vehicle on the lift and a full undercarriage inspection, so you know what’s worn, what’s failing and what still has life left before you spend anything on parts.
Front struts are the repair we see most. On many front-wheel-drive vehicles they’re due somewhere past 50,000 miles of New England roads, though it varies a lot by vehicle and how it’s driven. We match the replacement parts to your vehicle and the way you use it.
Because suspension work changes the wheel angles, most repairs need an alignment afterward, and we include that in the repair plan from the start. Walk-ins are welcome. Appointments are recommended and easy to schedule—call (508) 858-5722 or book online below.

Signs Your Suspension Needs Attention Now
Suspension wear creeps up so slowly that most drivers get used to it without noticing. These are the signs worth paying attention to on the roads around Fairhaven and the SouthCoast.
Bouncy or Floating Ride
Pulling or Drifting to One Side
Clunking or Knocking Over Bumps
Excessive Body Roll in Turns
Nose Dives When Braking
Uneven or Accelerated Tire Wear
South Coast winters are hard on suspensions. Frost heaves, potholes, and the freeze-thaw cycle that breaks up Route 6 and the side streets every winter wear suspension parts faster than mileage alone suggests. If your vehicle has 50,000 miles or more and has never had a suspension inspection, now is a good time.

Suspension Inspection & Repair at Midas Fairhaven
Every suspension repair at Midas Fairhaven starts with a complete undercarriage inspection. You’ll know what we found, what needs attention now and what can wait, before any work begins.
Strut Replacement
On most modern vehicles the front struts are structural: they act as the shock absorber and hold the spring. When a strut wears out, ride, handling and steering all suffer. We typically replace struts as complete assemblies for proper fit and lasting performance.
Shock Absorber Replacement
Shocks control how the springs rebound after a bump. Worn shocks cause a floating ride, longer stops and uneven tire wear. We replace shocks in pairs, front or rear, to keep the handling balanced.
Ball Joint Replacement
Ball joints connect the steering knuckle to the control arm and let the suspension move while you steer. Worn ball joints clunk and cause pulling, and a ball joint that fails completely can cause a loss of steering. It’s a safety part that needs prompt attention.
Sway Bar Link & Bushing Service
Sway bar links and bushings help control body lean in turns. Worn links clunk over bumps and let the vehicle lean more in corners. They’re among the most commonly worn suspension parts, and one of the simpler repairs.
Control Arm & Bushing Replacement
Control arms hold the wheel in position and absorb road forces through rubber bushings. Worn bushings cause vague steering, pulling and clunks. Replacing a worn or bent arm restores the geometry, and a wheel alignment afterward keeps the tires wearing evenly and the car tracking straight.
Wheel Bearing Replacement
A failing wheel bearing makes a hum or growl that changes with speed and often gets louder in turns. Left alone, it can damage the hub and affect the ABS sensor, and in extreme cases the wheel can separate. We diagnose and replace bearings on all makes and models.
What Our Technician Wants You to Know
“The thing I most want drivers to understand is that suspension affects braking. Worn shocks let the vehicle pitch and bounce, the tires lose grip, and it can take noticeably longer to stop. That’s not a comfort issue. That’s your safety margin.”
Suspension wear is invisible from the driver’s seat until it isn’t. The ride changes so gradually that most people don’t realize how far it’s gone until they drive something with a healthy suspension. Pushing down hard on each corner and counting the bounces is a rough check at home, but only a lift inspection shows the real condition of the ball joints, bushings and mounts.
The other thing I see all the time is new tires going on over worn shocks. The new set wears in the same cupped pattern because the cause, a shock that can’t control the tire, was never fixed. If your tires are wearing unevenly, check the shocks before buying tires.
Ball joints are the part I take most seriously. A worn one clunks and pulls, which is annoying but manageable. A failed one can separate, and at speed that’s dangerous. If a ball joint shows play on the lift, it gets flagged as a priority.
When the Potholes Finally Win
From the Service Desk
Here’s a pattern we see every spring. A clunk over bumps starts sometime in the fall. The driver lives with it through the winter, figuring it’s just the rough pavement. By spring, when the vehicle finally goes up on the lift, there are often two or three worn parts instead of one: a pair of failed sway bar links, say, and a cracked strut mount letting the strut move in ways it shouldn’t. With the worn parts replaced and the alignment set, the vehicle drives like a different car, and the driver realizes how bad the clunk had gotten.
That’s the most common suspension story. It starts small, gets explained away through the winter, and by spring several parts needed attention months earlier. A suspension inspection takes about twenty minutes on the lift, and that’s the easiest version of this conversation.

Massachusetts Roads Don't Go Easy on Suspension

Every pothole hit is a shock load on your suspension.
The freeze-thaw cycle that hits the SouthCoast every winter is one of the hardest things on a suspension. Water seeps into cracks in the pavement, freezes, expands and opens up the potholes that define spring driving on Route 6, Huttleston Ave and every side street in between. Each hit is a shock load on every suspension part.
Road salt adds corrosion. It works on bushings, ball joint boots and sway bar hardware, and the salt air near the harbor doesn’t help. Rubber parts that would last longer in a drier climate crack and wear out sooner here. If your vehicle has been through several New England winters without a suspension inspection, it’s worth a look underneath.
We’re at 178 Huttleston Ave on Route 6, serving drivers from Fairhaven, Acushnet, Mattapoisett and New Bedford. Walk-ins are welcome. For suspension work, booking ahead is best so we can set aside the lift time your vehicle needs.

Suspension Repair FAQ
Straight answers to the questions we hear most at the Fairhaven shop.
It depends on which parts need attention and on the vehicle. Shocks and struts, ball joints, control arms and wheel bearings all vary in parts cost and labor time. We inspect first and give you a clear estimate before any work begins, so there are no surprises. A free suspension inspection is the right first step.
Common signs are a bouncy or floating ride, extra body lean in turns, nose-diving when you brake, cupped or uneven tire wear, and a clunk over bumps. If your vehicle has more than 50,000 miles and you notice any of these, an inspection is a good idea. Shocks and struts wear so gradually that the change is easy to miss.
For short distances, usually, but don’t put it off. Worn shocks and struts can lengthen stopping distance, reduce tire grip and make the vehicle harder to control in a sudden maneuver or on wet roads. They also wear out your tires and other suspension parts faster. If you have symptoms, get it checked.
Yes, after any repair that changes the suspension geometry. Replacing struts, ball joints, control arms or tie rod ends without an alignment leads to uneven tire wear and shortens the life of the new parts. We build the alignment into the repair plan up front.
A strut is a structural part that combines the shock absorber with the spring mount, and on the front it’s often part of the steering pivot. A shock absorber is a separate damper that works alongside a spring mounted elsewhere. Many front-wheel-drive vehicles use struts in front and shocks in the rear. Both control the ride and handling, but struts take more labor to replace.
A pull can come from suspension wear, such as a sagging strut or a worn control arm bushing, from an alignment problem that wear has caused, or from both. A loose, wandering feel on the highway often points to worn tie rod ends, ball joints or a failing strut mount. An inspection pinpoints the source so the right part gets fixed.
Shocks or struts on one axle usually take 1.5 to 2.5 hours. If ball joints, control arms or sway bar links are being replaced too, plan for 3 to 4 hours, plus about 45 minutes for an alignment. We’ll give you a realistic estimate at drop-off, and booking ahead is recommended for suspension work.
Rough Ride. Real Fix.
You don’t have to live with the clunk or the bounce. Schedule suspension service at Midas Fairhaven, or call us directly. A free inspection is the right first step.
